Because Maureen's blog has gotten me a bit of notoriety and caused a stir of speculation, I thought I would put the questions to rest about why I point in the majority of pictures taken of me (Plus she stayed logged onto her blog on my computer). For people that aren't an artist or don't know me that well yet, this blog might be difficult to follow.
First of all, yes, this blog is a take on my previous contributing contribution last year about my previous post about why I like to pose in pictures that appear like the cover of a christian rock album (above). And now to answer the burning question.
You know how some people are just born with the innate ability to just perform seemingly impossible gestures and poses? Well that is the relationship I have with pointing in pictures. I guess it started at an early age with my Mom's polaroid camera or watching Kirk Gibson point while rounding the bases in game 1 of the 1988 World Series1. I can't really place the exact origins of this talent, but as most of you have seen, this ability has been finely tuned into its present form.
The pointing as we know it today has taken on several different forms, which to the naked eye, seem like a simple gesture. But hold on, pump the breaks, there is much more to it than that. Take the "Enter the room/bar like a politician point".

This subtle expression as you enter a room, not only says you have arrived, but instantly pisses off the locals or your average tough guy. I once heard this while entering a Chili's.
"Who the f%&@ is this guy"
The second, and my personal favorite, it the "Steal the Picture that you are not suppose to be in point". This dickish activity brings you into a picture in which you definitely know you should have been in, by placing the focus of the image squarely on you. This is also known in Minnesota as the "Fran Tarkington".

The third, is of course, the "Affection Point". This is simply a sign of how happy you are for the person you are in the picture with. I had a picture like this with the President as most of you know, but Maureen's sister Clare got nervous taking the picture and couldn't wait for the flash. A true amateur.

Even when I am told not to point in a picture,

I find a way to get it in there to show some form of emotion. Like the picture here that shows my appreciation for the sweater that Maureen got me for Christmas. I am seriously really happy with the sweater. I mean this sweater is the best ever. Probably my most cherished possession2.
Like Jack Nicholas and Bill Russell, I do truly take pride in making others around me much better(Below). Before I hear all the comments about putting the finger away and to take a picture serious for once, think about the world if someone had taken away Picasso's brush, Casey's Pizza, or Maureen's language. You're welcome America.

You have a gem there, Maureen. I love it.
Hahahahahahahahha! Please just promise me we can get at least ONE photo sans "point" during the wedding? I mean, you can be pointing down at the ground, maybe, I'd totally be able to work with that.
P.S. Matt should start a blog. I'd definitely follow it.
Love it! Too funny! At least it's not an obscene hand gesture which Michael has insisted on doing in every photograph(including our wedding pictures!) ever since I have known him. Sometimes it's subtle but it's always there.
I agree, Matt needs his own blog. You two are just stealing the spotlight from each other! Oh my gosh your kids are either going to be hysterically hilarious or totally dull! he he he
First off Matt-Do you have a life?!
Second, I did not get nervous when I was taking you and mo's photo with President Obama..i just really wanted a picture of his crotch instead of you two.
I think this post has been the missing link for me understand (1) how awesome Matt is and (2) how Matt and 'MoCos' fit together so well.
I'm so inspired, i intend to begin integrating this into my picture activity.
